workshop confirmed

October 31st, 2005

I just spoke with Erica from the Community Darkrooms (http://www.communitydarkrooms.com), and we confirmed my workshop!  Yea!  Saturday, February 11th from noon to 3pm…. keep it open if you want to come.

The complete info on the basis of the workshop was posted earlier, but just to summarize…

It will cover the business side of photography – getting known
and thriving by doing what you love.  Developing a vision for where you are going with your work, help you get it seen, and help you take your
careers (or potential careers) to the next level.

They will have the info posted on their website sometime this winter, but if anyone has any questions about it feel free to get a hold of me and I’ll let you know the down low!

I love Morgan and John!

October 23rd, 2005

When I was in Manhattan last week I had the chance to do an engagement session with Morgan and John (their wedding is July 8th next year) in Times Square, and we had a ton of fun!!  I knew going into it that they were going to be one of the more spontaneous couples I work with, and they were even more fun than I thought.  The images reflect the theme of the night, which was anything goes and the more it made us laugh, the better.  Check out this awesome night we had (can’t wait for next time you two!!)….

Check out this awesome package I received from Megan!!  I love it!  I always tell all of you that I want to get to know you as much as possible and to help me out, and Megan definitely took me up.  She sent me a binder all organized with pictures of her and Matt, print outs of our emails, wedding pictures they like, floral ideas, magazine cut outs, it’s so cute I love it. Thanks so much Megan :-)

cleaner URL

October 18th, 2005

This new blog experiment has been a little bit more work than I planned, to say the least, but now we’ve got all the bugs worked out, it’s the way I (and you all) want it, so it’s finalized.  The last announcement I have on it (I hope) is that the address is different :

www.lukewalkerphotography.com/blog

It’s now been integrated as part of my site so everything flows together seamlessly.  I love sounding like one of those fancy business solution commercials right?  No really, if you type in the old address it will still take you here, but the new URL is cleaner and everything is a little more connected so this last move makes sense.

bigger photos!

October 14th, 2005

The feedback has been really good on the new blog (thank god), but there has only been one drawback and people keep repeating it…. the bigger photos on the old blog were more powerful.  So after a little frustration I am proud to announce larger photos on the blog!  Marissa and Don are the first to get them (since I got it finalized this afternoon), let me know what you think everyone :-)

congrats to Marissa and Don

October 14th, 2005

I have been anticipating this post for a while, and I’m really
excited for this.  Marissa has been an absolute sweetheart since I met
with her and Don a while back.  She was one of the first to sign up for
the newsletter, emailed me detailed directions from my place to hers
(and then every set of possible directions mixed and matched around the
ceremony and reception), visit this blog more than me I think, and her
folder full of info was like one of my old college textbooks.  Oh and
she even took my order for dinner weeks before the wedding! ;-)  I
could tell this was going to be a great wedding and one of those
weddings where you feel as much a guest as a photographer.  On top of
that, I just got this vibe from Don when we met that he was one of
those guys you just had to like.  A good hearted guy, the kind who
gives you a big firm handshake and looks you in the eye when he talks
with you.  And judging by his family’s house (which if I didn’t tell
you Don, was amazing) which was decorated with fireman memorabilia, I
get the feeling Don comes from a family who places an emphasis on
things like honor and pride.

So with all that said I want these images to be up for Marissa when her and Don return, so enjoy…..

  1. Marissa:

The pictures are more than I could have ever asked for. You are awesome, Luke! Thank you again for everything. We will certainly be recommending you to everyone from here on out!

  2. Jesse Lewke:

The pictures are beautiful, I may be partial because my daughter was the flower girl and you got great shots of her, but you did a great job. I can’t wait to see the rest of the pictures!!

  3. Luke:

It is such a pleasure to read your message this afternoon Marissa! Thanks so much and I’m delighted to hear how much the images are appreciated :-)

  4. Steve Clubb:

Luke, Pictures are great. Can’t wait to see more. Your comments are also wonderful. Yes, it was truly a special day.

congrats to Sarah and Danny

October 13th, 2005

Even though I try not to chimp too much at weddings (chimping is looking at the back of your camera all the time to see your shots), when I saw this shot of Sarah 5_2I just had to tell her how excited I was!!  I just love this shot, and it sums up the feelings of her and Danny’s wedding so well.  There were people from different countries coming together, and some language barriers to over come, but with that said it seemed to be one of the closest, more heart felt weddings.  Sarah just had this glow about her all day and I think this image just symbolizes it so well.  The selective focus, the black and white, the grain (and I’m not normally a fan of grain), I just think it resembles what an emotional event this was.  Congrats you two!

    Congratulations!

The Marx

October 13th, 2005

As I mentioned above, Sarah and Danny’s wedding was at the Marx in Syracuse… and for those reading this I want to say I was very impressed with the Marx.  It was laid out beautifully to shoot weddings (low white ceilings, big dance floor, fairly bright lighting… but all the windows can be a bummer).  Danielle and I go out to eat there fairly frequently, so it was cool to see the upper floor and how well they put together a wedding.  Plus I was served "real" food, which is a huge bonus ;-)  Anyway, I wanted to try and capture the feeling of the view (which was incredible) of the reception, but try to incorporate it into the wedding….. so below is a detail image that I think captures that feeling (it was a reflection in the window, no computer work of course)….

Oh and this sign was hanging on the wall and gave me a chuckle

workshop being planned

October 12th, 2005

This winter I’d like to put together a workshop or seminar, so right now I’m trying to put together the finishing touches on a workshop scheduled for early Spring (or later winter since we are in Upstate) 2006.  I’ll give a full announcement and more details once everything gets ironed out, but here are the prelim plans for you interested photographers…..

I’d love to cover a workshop on the business side of photography – getting known
and thriving by doing what you love.  So many people
are going to school to become a photographer, who want to be around
professionals, or find a resource to help them boost business and I’d love to
gear a workshop towards that.  I’d love to help them develop a vision for where
they are going with their work, help them get it seen, and help them take their
careers (or potential careers) to the next level.  I don’t want to sound like
I’m minimizing the importance of the technical side of teaching photography,
because it’s extremely important obviously.  I walk into a dark reception
location or shoot in a tent at night I know why I’m dragging shutter, why I want
to shoot wide open, why I’m bouncing my flash in different directions, and all
that helps make my work what it is.  But if I didn’t acquire the business
knowledge and savvy I now have I wouldn’t be where I am regardless of what I am
doing with my work.  I wouldn’t be in several magazines, on national websites,
being interviewed, doing weddings across the country, etc.  So I’d love to run a
workshop on all of the above material and help people get jazzed about their
potential success in addition to their work.

That was my quick write up on the topic of the workshop to interested organizations.  We’ll see what materializes, but just giving everyone a heads up that I will be doing something early 2006.  And for the interested people out there who want to attend don’t be afraid to email me and let me know what else you’d like covered in the workshop, now is the time!

  1. Renee Marquis:

GREAT ideal Luke..Good for you… count me in.. put me on the top of your mailing list as one of your first attendee… Best of Luck, Renee

  2. Luke:

Awesome Renee! Maybe I’ll see you this weekend, still not sure if I’m going to Binghamton yet.

  3. megan dailor:

    I’ll be #2 on the list. :)

(Although I hardly think my business method of writing things on scraps of paper needs revising… heh…)

  4. Luke:

Haha nice, this seems to be a very popular idea. And nothing wrong with writing things on scraps of paper, I do it everyday. Whenever I receive a phone call I take the notes and place them into a bin next to the phone in case they call back… that way when they call back I can rummage through the scraps of paper and reference it and it sounds like I remembered our last convo word for word. Mike Colon taught me that.

If you’re going to be at the workshop then I might have you give us a lesson on the choreographed dance to beat it though…. a must for any wedding photographer ;-)

  5. matt antonino:

Hey, I’m #3 if only cuz it’d be a planned time to meet ya! lol Seriously – I’m ALWAYS interested in learning and hearing how people do things different from what we’re doing.
